I think every creative type hits critical breaking point somewhere in their path. The level of burn out can be extreme. You’ve essentially delivered your own self-destruction through a multitude of projects with others with an inhumane level of commitment. Often we make a personal investment of the soul in our creative work, and when that investment is compromised, through the actions of yourself or others, you can experience a total annihilation of self.

Personally, I thrive on pushing my boundaries. I welcome the opportunity to stay busy and am a self-professed workaholic. When ideas run through your brain 24/7 and you experience a gut-wrenching, heart-gripping, genuine need to create, you have to get it out, whatever the cost. Sometimes that cost involves sacrificing those casual drinks with friends, your relationships, your homelife and even the self. Creation and destruction dance hand in hand.

After many months of working on several festivals, venues, events, films & performances, I reached breaking point… and ‘survived’. Project-wise, 2012 has been fruitful and productive. But at what cost? I had lost a large part of myself. Shortly after the conclusion of the Gorelesque tour, I set off on a 5 day journey, in order to fully reconnect with myself and the earth. And after waking up each morning with the sun, unzipping the tent to a view of the vast ocean shoreline… I feel reluctant to return to the virtual world … but eager to return to my creative work…

On The Road: Australian Burlesque Festival 2012

Earlier this year, in June, I was privileged enough to travel with the Australian Burlesque Festival as a headliner performer all around the country. Starting in Melbourne, I flew to Tasmania, to Brisbane, back to Melbourne, to Canberra, then Sydney, in the space of a week and a half. Though exhausting, it was an immense period of transition and transformation for me. I was happiest living out of a suitcase and thankful for the clarity being on the move brought me.

I took my camera where I could, and these are the results. I look back on each moment with fondness and a great deal of thankfulness for the people that surrounded me. Here are 23 reasons why I love being a performer on the road…

On The Road: Bring Back The Showgirl

Throughout May this year, I played production manager (aka girl-wrangler) to the touring production Bring Back The Showgirl. Between technical rehearsals at each venue, working in the wings and sleeping in the tour van, I had the rare, occasional moment to pick up the camera and shoot the girls in their moments of prep and performance. Here are the results:

From the crew that brought you Metropolis 2040, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn and Gorelesque, comes Melbourne’s next BIG burlesque event, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEWOMEN.

This cinematic time warp plunges its audience into the era of Golden Age Hollywood, a world where colourful chorus girls, top ‘n tailed dandies, vaudevillian comics and devilishly handsome leading gents reigned supreme. A time where film moguls and starlets, bent on fame and fortune, bathed in champagne and the lime light. A time where men were men, women could be men… and everything in-between.

Featuring live big band music and the best in circus and burlesque from around Australia, THE LEAGUE promises to be the black-tie event of the year. A show for the dandies, the divas, seductresses, swindlers, crooners and cross-dressers.

Burlesque isn’t dead. It’s sitting in the backroom, with a glass of scotch and a cigar, contemplating the glorious future.
